Although fossils can be found at this location, it is the wildlife and geological features of the area that are the real treats. Fossil plant remains can be found in the cliffs and loose rocks.

Location Information

Carboniferous plant fossils can be found in the cliffs and in the loose rocks both to the north and to the south of the village. These are generally poorly preserved, but if you are lucky better specimens may be found.

(Suitable for Children)

Little Haven has a sandy beach and plenty of rock pools for children to enjoy. There are few hazards and the walk to the various fossil hunting areas is relatively short.

 

Little Haven beach is within easy access from the village’s pay and display car park. From the bay in front of the village you must go north or south to find fossils and to view the geological features. There are no particularly difficult obstacles to overcome at this location.

Cliff and Foreshore

Plant fragments can be observed and collected from shale blocks found below the cliffs. Many interesting geological features can be observed along this stretch of coastline.

There is unrestricted access to this location. The area is an SSSI, however, so the cliffs and larger boulders should not be defaced.

The biggest risk at Little Haven is from the incoming tide. Make sure you have consulted the tide time tables before you visit the location and if you intend to go exploring, do so on a falling tide.

Stone Tumblers (Lapidary)


Stone Tumblers are used for tumbling and polishing rough rock, stones and pebbles including those found on the beach and glass.

Whilst collecting fossils, on those days where you come back empty handed, you could collect rocks, stones and glass from the beach and tumble then at home.

These are all high quality machines to give a professional finish to your samples. The tumblers can be used with a variety of grits, most commonly Silicon Carbide Grit and Cerium Oxide. We have a wide range of rough rocks for sale too.

Microfossils are much easier to collect because they are so small that the vast majority of collections only concentrate on large finds. These small finds can simply be found by taking small samples of sands, crags, clays and soft rocks and examining them under a microscope.

We have a wide range of microscopes for sale, both for the study of fossils, but also educational and professional for use in the laboratory. We have Stereo microscopes, Compound Microscopes, Polarising Microscopes and Monocular Microscopes.
